Cara Slagle, MD, MS
Dr. Cara Slagle is a neonatologist and physician-scientist at Indiana University School of Medicine and Riley Hospital for Children. Her academic focus is neonatal kidney health, with a particular emphasis on acute kidney injury (AKI), fluid imbalance, and neonatal dialysis. Dr. Slagle has helped define how urine biomarkers can be used to proactively detect kidney injury, improve screening to reduce nephrotoxin exposure related AKI, and guide fluid management in critically ill neonates. She currently leads the Improving CRRT Outcomes in Neonates and Infants through Interdisciplinary Collaboration (ICONIIC) Learning Health Network, which spans both QI and Research. In addition to her research leadership, Dr. Slagle has helped implement AKI screening protocols in NICUs, developed clinical decision-support tools, and led efforts to establish neonatal dialysis programs in Level IV NICUs. She currently serves on the board of the Neonatal Kidney Collaborative and has co-authored national consensus statements on AKI risk stratification and long-term kidney monitoring for NICU graduates. Through her innovative, collaborative work, Dr. Slagle continues to shape the future of neonatal nephrology by integrating cutting-edge science with bedside care to improve short- and long-term outcomes for neonates and infants.
