How Can We Help? Understanding Warnings of Suicidal Behavior Among Black Youth
Invited SPR Keynote Speaker: Michael A. Lindsey, PhD, MSW, MPH
Executive Director,
Institute for Poverty Policy and Research
Constance and Martin Silver Professor of Poverty Studies
Suicide rates for Black children ages 5 to 11 exceed any other ethnic group. According to new research by Dr. Lindsey, suicide attempt rates are rising among Black high school-aged adolescents, and those who attempt suicide are likely to have disparate health outcomes tied to socioeconomic problems in the Black community. Based on his research Dr. Lindsey will share steps stakeholders can take to reverse these trends through attention to early warning signs, improved access to care, particularly mental health treatment, and other key preventative measures.

Better together: the value of collaboration
Joel N. Hirschhorn, MD, PhD
Immediate Past President
Society for Pediatric Research
Chief, Division of Endocrinology, Boston Children’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School
Research is a team effort that often requires collaboration, but setting up and navigating collaborations involves a specific set of skills and principles that are not often taught in training. The talk will review some of these skills and principles, and also discuss the value of collaboration and inclusiveness in the context of SPR.
Better together: empowering all voices
Stephanie D. Davis, MD
President, Society for Pediatric Research
Brewer Professor and Chair,
Department of Pediatrics
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
In today’s academic medicine environment, the voices of all stakeholders must be heard. Without the input of these voices, decision making and research conclusions will not be optimally effective. This presentation will highlight both the impact and importance of inclusivity in research and SPR activities addressing these issues.
